Chances are, there\u2019s more to them than you realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word <em>Verres photochromiques<\/em> comes from Greek\u2014<em>photo<\/em> meaning light, and <em>chroma<\/em> meaning color. So, photochromic quite literally means something that changes color with light. But light is a complex subject, and because of that, not all photochromic lenses work the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Bozza  YT 2 mmmm\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/21doDmrLeGE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Classic Photochromic Lens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common type of photochromic lenses uses molecules and pigments that react to UV light. Step outdoors, and within 10 to 20 seconds, they darken through a chemical reaction. It\u2019s a clever solution\u2014but not without its limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, the transition back to clear can take time\u2014anywhere from 2 to 3 minutes, depending on the lens. They\u2019re also temperature-sensitive: colder weather slows them down and can cause the lenses to stay dark longer than needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another downside? They don\u2019t work inside cars. Windshields block UV rays, so the lenses don\u2019t get the signal to darken. Since UV light is invisible to the human eye, the lenses might appear dark even when you\u2019d prefer them clear. Still, this technology offers a good level of light adaptation at a fairly accessible price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, manufacturers have introduced new types of photochromic lenses to tackle these issues. Some lenses now offer limited activation behind windshields, though they still don&#8217;t get dark enough and remain slow to react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, companies decided to take a completely different approach\u2014and that\u2019s when electrochromic lenses entered the scene. These lenses incorporate an electronic system. When an electrical impulse is applied, the lenses darken\u2014much like the windows on airplanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovation brought some improvements: faster transitions, but not instant. And because of the high energy requirements, they need batteries\u2014adding weight, bulk, and the hassle of recharging. While that might be acceptable in stationary environments, it\u2019s not ideal for portable gear like sunglasses or ski goggles. Unsurprisingly, electrochromic technology never really took off in the outdoor sports world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The New Generation: IRID\u00ae Lenses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A much more recent advancement has emerged in the form of IRID\u00ae lenses\u2014electronic photochromic lenses that solve many of the issues faced by earlier technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These lenses darken in <strong>less than one second<\/strong> without the need for batteries, thanks to a built-in solar panel. The panel senses the intensity of visible light\u2014<em>not<\/em> UV\u2014and powers a liquid crystal film that adjusts the lens tint in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRID\u00ae lenses go from nearly clear (Category 1) to dark sun protection (Category 3), smoothly covering all the shades in between. Since they operate on visible light, they react to the light you actually see. They&#8217;re also not affected by temperature changes, making them a reliable choice in any environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the same type of fast-reacting liquid crystal technology used in high-performance welding masks\u2014now adapted for sports and outdoor use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There may be no such thing as the \u201cperfect\u201d lens\u2014but the right lens does exist for your specific needs, sport, and budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope this breakdown has helped you better understand the wide variety of photochromic lens technologies out there.
