Out Of is an Italian company founded by the Righi brothers, specializing in innovation for outdoor sports. Starting with ski goggles, it was among the first to introduce rapid lens change systems and photochromic and polarized lenses in a single solution. Their IRID® technology allows the lenses to adapt to light without batteries. Out Of’s mission is to improve sports performance through science.

Traditional photochromic lenses are activated by a chemical reaction, and since it is not an explosion, it is a slow reaction. To go from clear to dark they are relatively fast, taking about ten seconds, but from dark to clear again takes entire minutes.

The IRID® electronic lens, on the other hand, thanks to its patented and innovative liquid crystal system, is up to 100 times faster than traditional photochromic lenses, being able to switch on and off in less than a second, without the use of any battery.

So you can have the perfect lens instantly. Do you enter a forest? In less than 1 second the lens becomes clear. Do you go out of the woods? In less than 1 second the lens goes dark again.

The concept is the same as welding goggles, but saying “liquid crystals” means a little bit of everything and a little bit of nothing because the types are really so many. What we have done is to take a technology that already existed, but has very strong technical limitations that have always limited its use in other fields, and with a whole series of implementations make it versatile.

These implementations are encapsulated in the 11 patents (approved & pending) that we have filed over the years.

What we mean by versatile:

– applicable to very large and very curved surfaces (which seems trivial, but is not)

– completely battery-free (welding masks usually use a button one)

– with an optical clarity indistinguishable from a normal polycarbonate lens and therefore legally approved

– with a ti activation curve that makes it very nice to use because it perfectly follows the needs of the eye by covering any intermediate gradation

In short, details often make the big differences.

The Bot 2 is activated by a small photovoltaic panel on the top of the eyeglass; when this small panel is hit by sunlight it creates energy and activates a liquid crystal film inside the lens. If there is no light simply no power is generated and the lens remains off.

No, thanks to IRID® technology even very sudden changes in light are dampened and harmonized thanks to the fact that the lens responds in a gradual manner, this dramatically decreases the perception of the change in brightness reducing the annoying effect that occurs with static lenses.

Our lenses have an anti-scratch treatment that makes them extremely resistant to surface scratches. In addition, the hydrophobic and oleophobic Ri-Pel treatment helps repel water and dirt, keeping the lenses clean longer. The frame is designed to protect the lenses from bumps and drops, minimizing the risk of accidental damage.
